چکیده

Electrospinning has emerged as a facile technology for the synthesis of ultrafine fibers and even nanofibers of various materials. While carbon nanofibers have been extensively investigated, there have also been studies reported on metal oxide and metal carbide fibers. Yet, comparative studies, especially following the same general synthesis approach, are lacking. In our comprehensive study, we use a sol gel process by which a carrier polymer (cellulose acetate or polyvinylpyrrolidone) is mixed with titanium butoxide, zirconium(IV) acetylacetonate, or niobium n-butoxide to yield nanotextured titania/carbon, zirconia/ carbon, or niobia/carbon nonwoven textiles. Carbothermal reduction between 1300 C and 1700 C effectively transforms the metal oxide/carbon fibers to metal carbide/carbon nanocomposite while preserving the fiber integrity. As a beneficial effect, the fiber diameter decreases compared to the asspun state and we obtained ultrafine fibers: 294 108 nm for ZrC/C, 122 28 nm for TiC/C, and 65 36 nm for NbC/C. The highly disordered and porous nature of the carbon matrix engulfing the metal carbide nanocrystals enables a high specific surface area of up to 450 m g 1 (TiC/C) after carbothermal reduction.

Carbon nanotubes reinforced electrospun chitosan nanocomposite coating on anodized AZ31 magnesium alloy

Chitosan based nanofibers containing carbon nanotubes were applied on AZ31 magnesium alloy via electrospinning. The magnesium substrate was initially anodized in a NaOH solution in order to improve the adhesion between the coating and substrate. Electrospinning parameters were optimized and homogenous nanofibers composite coatings were produced. Addition of carbon nanotubes reduced the size of ...

Increasing the hydrogen storage capacity of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) through facile impregnation by TiO2, ZrO2 and ZnO nanocatalysts

Various nanocomposites of TiO2, ZnO and ZrO2 decorated single wall Carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were fabricated by facile and template free continuous ultrasonication/stirring of virgin metal oxide nanopowders and SWNTs in ethanol under UV-light illumination. The TEM micrographs showed that nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and bonded on the surface of SWNTs. The results of XRD as well a...

Carbon-protected bimetallic carbide nanoparticles for a highly efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the two important half reactions in current water-alkali and chlor-alkali electrolyzers. To make this reaction energy-efficient, development of highly active and durable catalytic materials in an alkaline environment is required. Herein we report the synthesis of carbon-coated cobalt-tungsten carbide nanoparticles that have proven to be efficient ...
